Taking Over

TAKING OVER: WOMEN IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WAS AN EVENT ORGANIZED AND MANAGED BY MORGAN MASSEY. THE PURPOSE OF THE EVENT WAS TO HIGHLIGHT WOMEN IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHO AS A WHOLE, ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED, UNDER APPRECIATED, AND RARELY GIVEN CREDIT FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO MUSIC. THE EVENT WAS HELD AT CROSSTOWN ARTS IN MEMPHIS, TN WHERE FOUR LOCAL ARTISTS (ALEXIS JADE, TONI MACK, SARAH SPAIN, AND TRINITY ADAIR) PERFORMED.

THE DESIGN INSPIRATION AND CONCEPT

The client and I talked about several ideas but settled on the idea of using silhouettes of four famous female artists as the main component of the logo. We went with Selena, Ella Fitzgerald, Lady Gaga, and Aretha Franklin (left to right). I used a large font and made it black to give the logo a bolder, stronger aesthetic. The client wanted to honor more artists than just the main four on the logo. In order to do this, she came up with a list of influential female artists to include in the background of the poster. For the overall color scheme, I decided on Earth-tones because the client wanted the branding to look feminine but mature and respectable. We felt that pinks and purples that are typically considered feminine, would look childish and may contrast the message that was being conveyed at the event.
